Upcoming IP4OS webinar explores patents in an open science ecosystem

IP4OS will host a webinar on 18 June at 1:00 PM (CET), featuring Dr. Julia Konrad, a patent attorney.

In this webinar, different ways of engaging with patents in an open science ecosystem will be explored. On the one hand, it will be discussed to what extent patented subject matter can be used in a research context. On the other hand, if patent protection is chosen as part of an IP strategy, it will be briefly explained what a patent actually is and which core requirements must be met for grant, in particular regarding novelty and inventive step. Attention will be drawn to what must be considered in advance with regard to one’s own data, publications, and disclosures to avoid unintended prior art relevant for patentability. The structural elements of a patent and the logic of claims will be outlined to make patent documents more accessible to non-specialists. In addition, it will be demonstrated how the review and drafting process for a patent application can be optimally supported by inventors through technical input and examples.

Dr. Julia Konrad is a patent attorney and associate partner at COHAUSZ & FLORACK. She is an expert in (bio)chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and life sciences, representing clients before the European Patent Office, the German Patent and Trademark Office, the Federal Patent Court, and the Unified Patent Court. Dr. Julia Konrad studied biochemistry in Tübingen, completed her doctorate at the University of Zurich with a scholarship from the Boehringer Ingelheim Fund, and has gained extensive international research experience.
